w2: Task 2: Where Does the Time Go?

topic posted Wed, February 11, 2004 - 8:54 AM by  offlinelobocita
Where does your time go? List your five major activities this week. How much time did you give to each one? Which were what you wanted to do and which were shoulds? How much of your time is spent helping others and ignoring your own desires? Have any of your blocked friends triggered doubts in you?

[note: in rereading the chapter again (see post: "inspired"), it occurred to me that we might try to do this exercise as a group]

    1. Computer
    2. Web pages
    3. Work
    4. Running
    5. Television

I noticed that even if I listed to 100, sewing would not be on the list! This is a great exercise, because d'oh! I am supposed to be sewing! Er, not supposed to be. I would rather be sewing!
That is, the artwork isn't going to sew itself!

    School - Want to do
Socializing with friends - Want to do
    Computer work - Should
Computer play - Want to do
Painting (outside of school) - Want to do

    School takes up 12 hours.
    Socializing about 5.
    Work, about 4 or 5.
Play, hours and hours and hours and hours.
    Couple of hours.

Hmm, I think I'd like to spend more time painting, and less time goofing off on my computer. Time to go!

      1. Working - 10 hours a day (Should)
      2. Exersizing – ½ hour a day (Should)
      3. Watching TV – 3 hours a day (Want)
      4. House Cleaning – 1 hour a day (Should)
      5. Dieting - Almost all day (Should)

and...I somehow didn't get the Artistic needs into this list. But I think it would also be a Should at this point, as I haven't found the momentum yet.

At work most of my time is helping others and ignoring my desires. We had to change our schedules today to provide more coverage of the window and desks, so I have less time at home now, more at work.

    1. Work (10 hrs) -Should
    2. Sleep(9 hrs)& Eat(2 hrs?)-Necessity/Should
    3. Watch TV/Internet surfing (3 hrs)-Want
    4. Reading/Writing (1 hr) -Want
    5. Yoga/Meditating (1 hr) -Want and Should.

I am a pretty independant person and don't usually get blocked by my friends anymore, (unlike in my 20's).I guess I don't really identify myself yet as an "artist"...that's Leonardo Da Vinci and people of that calibre, not me! It's good to read the 2nd chapter and remind myself this is not true! In the book, pg. 55, Julia Cameron says: "Remember that it is far harder and more painful to be a blocked artist than it is to do the work."
    Good reminder!

    1) sleep/zoning out (probably 12 hours a day)
    2) school (15 hrs week)
    3) surfing the internet (3 hrs day)
    4) reading (2 hrs day)
    5) meditating (1 hr day)

I dont think any of these are things that I feel I should do, but a few are things that I probably should not.. hehe. At least I'm not working right now.. recharging the old batteries. Oh yeah and five more lives I'll pretend to live:

    1) computer hacker
    2) world traveler
    3) author
    4) pilot
    5) poet

hmmmm I'll have to really use imagination to pretend on some of those.
